‘Familiars’, 2021

Just when you think your days of retirement and relaxation have begun, the new bouncing, baby familiar comes home. You’re meant to be napping; dozing lightly by the fire while your witch boils her daily boil potion. But no. It’s not meant to be. There’s a child on your old, tired back. They want to know if their hat is on right. Of course it is. There’s only so many ways to wear a hat. The jingle of the bell on their collar is loud in your ear and their paws knead your spine restlessly.

Just when you thought your days of retirement and relaxation had begun, the new bouncing, baby familiar came home. Maybe… you could get used to them. Eventually.
